Why is my fridge not cooling but the light still works?
The light runs on the door switch, so it works even when the cooling system is dead. It usually means a refrigerant leak, a failed compressor, or a burnt start relay. If the compressor is warm and humming but nothing gets cold, the relay is the first thing we check — it is also the cheapest of the three to fix.
How do I know if my fridge needs gas refilling?
Typical signs are the compressor running constantly without cooling, partial cooling in the freezer only, or frost forming in one small patch on the evaporator. Important: refrigerant is a sealed system — it does not "run out" with use. If it is low, there is a leak, and any technician who tops it up without finding that leak is taking your money for a repair that will fail again in weeks.
My freezer is cold but the fridge section is warm. Why?
In frost-free models, cold air is made in the freezer and blown down into the fridge compartment. If that evaporator fan fails, or the air damper is blocked with ice, the freezer stays cold while the fridge slowly warms up. It is a common fault and usually repairable in one visit.
Is replacing a compressor worth the money?
On a mid-size or large fridge that is otherwise in good condition, yes — a new compressor typically costs far less than a replacement refrigerator and adds many years. On a small, very old, or rusted unit, it often is not worth it. We check the cabinet, door seals and evaporator before recommending the work, and we tell you honestly when replacement is the better option.
Why is there so much ice in my freezer?
In a frost-free fridge, a heater melts frost off the evaporator on a timed cycle. When the defrost heater, timer or bi-metal thermostat fails, ice builds up until it blocks airflow completely. Manual defrosting clears it for a week or two, but the fault comes straight back until the defrost component is replaced.
How long does a fridge repair take?
Fan, thermostat, relay and defrost repairs are typically finished in 60 to 90 minutes. Gas charging takes longer because the system must be leak-tested, evacuated and charged properly, then left to pull temperature. Compressor replacement is the longest job and sometimes needs a follow-up visit to confirm performance.
